I really enjoyed this book! After searching through some of her late grandmother's belongings, the author discovers that her grandmother may have been a lesbian in a time when it was extremely dangerous to be anything other than a devoted housewife. As she begins to research her grandmother's past she uncovers a story that she feels she is meant to share with the world, a story which has been hidden for over 100 years!
This book borders two genres, it is somewhere between where memoir meets historical fiction, as the story time hops from the real events related to the author's research in the mid 2010s to a century earlier when the author's grandmother would have been alive. Using as much historical data as possible, the author tells her grandmother's story in the style of historical fiction, with minimal liberties taken when creating conversations and events that may or may not have happened exactly as she imagined. Both stories are very interesting, especially for readers who enjoy researching historical events or family information from the past. The way the author wrote her present day sections made me feel almost as if I was on the journey with her! As much as I loved the present day story, I think I loved the historical fiction part even more. I have not read very many LGBTQ historical fictions, but I definitely learned a lot about the danger LGBTQ individuals would have faced and the efforts that would be required to hide their identities in order to protect themselves and their families. Knowing that it was based on a historically accurate real story, made it even more powerful.
I would highly recommend this book! Thanks so much to Book Sirens and the publisher for giving me a free copy and the opportunity to read and voluntarily review this wonderful book!
