Instamom

Updated: Jul 12, 2022

I won a free copy of this book from 49th shelf and am so excited that I got the opportunity to read this book! I originally thought it was a memoir about a mom who is well known on instagram - clearly I did not read the description properly! It is chick lit fiction, with a bit of romantic fiction without being the hot and heavy or uber predictable typical of the romance genre.

Instamom by Chantel Guertin, a Canadian author, tells the story of Kit Kidding, a 33 year old instagram influencer well known for her child-free philosophy. Kit does not want to be a parent and ends up breaking up with her long term ex because he changed his mind and wanted children. When she meets an amazing, and single, personal chef, she starts to fall head over heels, the only problem is that he doesn't know about her child-free philosophy and she doesn't know about his 8 year old daughter.

While at times a bit predictable (what rom com isn't though?) the story is light hearted and interesting. I am not a huge fan of the typical romance story. I sometimes start them and then maybe get 1/3 of the way in and get sick of the too graphic but not quite erotica that takes place continuously throughout (see hot and heavy above). I also find the typical storylines way too predictable - two people meet in location, determine that they hate one another, then somehow have sex, then fall in love, then something bad happens and they remember why they hate each other, then they fall back in love the end. In this case it is more along the lines of: "Meet each other, find out that maybe dating someone who has a kid when you don't want kids is a bad idea, keep doing it anyway, experience trials and tribulations that come along with this problem, remember why this was a problem, happy ending (I'm trying not to give spoilers, but you know how rom coms end right?). Still predictable but not 100% predictable and with some good character development so I think you'll be able to stick with it!

I loved this book and am so happy that I got the chance to read it through a 49th shelf give away and Double Day Canada! It was such a fun read and probably not something I would have picked out myself at a book store, even though it is totally the perfect book for me! If you love a good rom com, don't 100% prescribe to the norms of gender roles (ie. not every woman has to give birth, they can exist without getting pregnant), and enjoy seeing strong, independent female main characters who want to support strong, independent female supporting characters and readers, then this is the book for you!
